有段者 yūdansha Black Belt
One who holds a dan rank: the rank a black belt stands for in jūdō and karate.
Master Takase creates this beautiful scroll when your order is placed, personally preparing the ink and brushing your art, which proudly bears her signature and seal. This is an original work of art.
Description
有段者 (yūdansha): one who holds a dan rank, shodan or above.
有段者 is what a person becomes on the day of the first black belt. In jūdō and karate the belt is the sign, and the word names the rank itself. A go or shōgi player with a dan has as much right to the word as anyone on the mat. Whether it is for your own promotion or for someone who has just earned theirs is yours.
有段者 is composed of the kanji 有 (read yū) meaning "have; possess", 段 (read dan) meaning "dan (black belt) rank", and 者 (read sha) meaning "person".
有段者 is a Meiji word for one who holds a dan, a grade the go houses set in the late seventeenth century; a jūjutsu school's pupils are called by it in print in 1888 and the Kōdōkan's members by 1894, and English met it in 1913, when a Kōdōkan teacher told a visiting journalist that the yūdansha are the ones allowed to wear the black belt.

About Our Scrolls
Master Japanese Calligrapher Eri Takase brushes your scroll by hand when you order it. Each scroll bears her red seal, 英利, and her signature.
The scrolls are 12 1/4" W × 43" H (31 × 109 cm) with woven damask borders and Japanese paper that are layered so the scroll hangs straight and will not warp over time. The scrolls themselves are made by a scroll maker in Gifu, Japan, and we have worked with them for over two decades.
Eri Takase was born and raised in Osaka, Japan, and holds the rank of Shihan, the highest rank in Japanese calligraphy, from the Bokuteki-kai and the Bunka-shodo. About Master Takase
