This page answers two questions: what you may do with what you find on this site, and how we use the work of others.

Using What You Find Here

The name readings, translations, meanings, and articles on this site are here to be used. Quote them, print them, share a page, take a reading to your tattoo artist or a translation to your teacher. If you publish what you find here, please credit takase.com and link to the page, so your readers can see the sources behind it.

The calligraphy is Master Takase's original work, and every image of it remains hers. A design you purchase comes with a personal-use license, described in our Terms of Service. For products, publications, or marketing, a commercial license is a separate purchase. Images of her work that you have not purchased may not be copied or republished.

The historical books in the library carry their own status on Library Sources & Hosting; those in the public domain may be used as any public-domain work.

Automated copying, bulk downloading, or systematic extraction of the site is not permitted, as our Terms of Service state.

How We Use the Work of Others

This site draws on the work of others: published translations and commentary, name dictionaries and databases, and a small library of historical books. Every source is credited where it is used.

Translations and Quoted Works

Most translations on this site, including the haiku on our scroll pages, are our own. Each is credited where it appears as Translation by Timothy L. Jackowski, Takase Studios, LLC. Where we quote a published translation or commentary, the page names the translator and the work beside the poem, with page numbers and a link to the book where one exists. We encourage you to support these authors, as we have, by purchasing the referenced works.

Reference Works and Data

The dictionaries, databases, pronunciation tools, and research behind every name on this site are listed on Name Resources, with the license each is used under where one applies.

Hosted Historical Works

The library hosts a small collection of historical works on Japanese art and culture, digitized from the original editions. Their provenance and copyright status, and how to request removal, are on Library Sources & Hosting.

Copyright and Fair Use

Copyrights in the works quoted on this site remain with their authors and publishers. Brief quotations appear under the fair use doctrine and are credited where they are used. Licensed data is used under its license, as noted on the pages above. Our own designs, translations, and text are covered by our Terms of Service. If you hold rights in a quoted work and object to its use here, contact us and we will address it promptly.
