Description

In loneliness,
there is joy too,
An autumn eve

sabishisa no
ureshiku mo ari
aki no kure
さびしさの
うれしくも有
秋の暮
buson 蕪村

さびしさのうれしくも有秋の暮 (sabishisa no ureshiku mo ari aki no kure): loneliness, and there is gladness in it too; autumn dusk. さびしさの is loneliness as the subject; うれしくも有 is is glad, too, and the も is the whole poem, the gladness inside the loneliness and not instead of it; 秋の暮 is autumn dusk, or the end of autumn, and the phrase carries both. There is no image and no scene, only a feeling named, qualified by one syllable, and then the hour. The verse comes from Buson's posthumous papers, and the Japanese critics have argued since 1904 whether its plainness is sublime or a little too open; the instant it names, when the loneliness one has been dreading turns out to be welcome, is exact either way. The English is R. H. Blyth's, from his Haiku of 1952, in the Japanese order rather than his.

About Our Scrolls

Eri Takase was born and raised in Osaka, Japan, and holds the rank of Shihan, the highest rank in Japanese calligraphy, from the Bokuteki-kai and the Bunka-shodo. About Master Takase

Master Takase personally brushes your Japanese scroll when you order. Each scroll proudly bears her red seal, 英利, and her signature.

The scrolls are 12 1/4" W × 43" H (31 × 109 cm) with real silk borders and Japanese paper that are layered so the scroll hangs straight and will not warp over time. The scrolls themselves are made by Sankō (株式会社三幸) in Gifu prefecture, which has been making high quality scrolls since 1947, and we have worked with Sankō for over two decades.
