Description
Never Surrender in Japanese is 決して降伏しない which is read kesshite kōfuku shinai
決して降伏しない (kesshite kōfuku shinai): never surrender, a resolution rather than a shout.
決して降伏しない says: whatever comes, I will not give in. Like the English, it names no one who refuses, so it is a vow for whoever says it. 決して with a negative is never, by no means, and 降伏 is surrender, to admit defeat and submit. The verb is in its plain form, the one Japanese uses for what a person means to do, so it reads as something already decided.
The English cry is older than Churchill: a Boston song of liberty in 1768 has the sons of the brave who will never surrender, and Travis wrote I shall never surrender or retreat from the Alamo in 1836; the Japanese sentence is in print by 1904, in a lecture's vow to fight on until the body lies on the battlefield, and was rendering Churchill's line of June 1940 by 1944.

About Our Scrolls
Master Japanese Calligrapher Eri Takase brushes your scroll by hand when you order it. Each scroll bears her red seal, 英利, and her signature.
The scrolls are 12 1/4" W × 43" H (31 × 109 cm), with woven damask borders and layered Japanese paper, designed to last generations. The scrolls themselves are made by a scroll maker in Gifu, Japan, and we have worked with them for over two decades.
Eri Takase was born and raised in Osaka, Japan, and holds the rank of Shihan, the highest rank in Japanese calligraphy, from the Bokuteki-kai and the Bunka-shodo. About Master Takase
