一意専心
ichii senshin
Wholehearted Devotion
Wholehearted devotion: the whole mind poured into one thing, without a glance to the side, in a phrase that goes back to the Chinese Guanzi.
Master Takase creates this beautiful scroll when your order is placed, personally preparing the ink and brushing your art, which proudly bears her signature and seal. This is an original work of art.
Description
一意専心 (ichii senshin) is word for word one intent, the mind solely on it. 一意 and 専心 are two near-synonyms set side by side.
The phrase is current Japanese, often used of aiming at a goal in work or study. A sumo wrestler used it at his promotion ceremony in 1993, and a prime minister in a state-funeral eulogy.
On the Song print's page, the commentary printed with the text glosses 搏, the third character of the Guanzi's line, as to gather and knot together. W. Allyn Rickett's English of 1998 reads that character as 專, the older form of 専, and renders the line You will focus your power of awareness and concentrate your mind.
Rickett's note names Yasui among the scholars behind his reading of the character as 專. His volume one gives the name as Yasui Kō, whose Japanese commentary on the Guanzi is of 1864.
The phrase goes back to a line of the Chinese Guanzi, a book compiled, by the account of Japan's largest historical dictionary, between the end of the Warring States and the Han, whose Song-dynasty print writes it 一意搏心; the Japanese form writes the third character 専, and the dictionaries' instances of it run from 1922.
