Spirit Over Technique in Japanese is 技術より心術 which is read gijutsu yori shinjutsu
技術より心術 (gijutsu yori shinjutsu): the mind's bearing over the technique. より weighs one word against the other: 術 is in both, 技 is the skill of the hands and 心 the heart. 心術 is old Japanese, and the dictionaries' first citation for it is Dōgen's Shōbōgenzō; it was a Zen word for the bearing of the mind long before it was karate's. Funakoshi Gichin, the founder of Shōtōkan karate, set the pair among his twenty precepts. Spirit over technique is the received English; mentality over technique is the other.
