家内安全 (kanai anzen): the household kept safe.

家内安全 is the wish that no one in a family meets illness, fire or misfortune. It is said for the people inside one house, and it is the prayer on the amulet that sits on the family's house-shelf. The word says safe. The prosperity in the English title belongs to its neighbor on that shelf, 商売繁盛, a thriving trade. It is the scroll for a new house. Its companion 家庭円満, a harmonious home, wishes for what happens inside. Whether you hang it in a new home or an old one is yours.

家内安全 is composed of the word 家内 (read kanai) meaning "household; one's family" and 安全 (read anzen) meaning "safety; security".

家内安全 is a prayer for a household's safety, first known from a Muromachi priest's prayer of about 1400 and the standard wish on shrine and temple amulets from the Edo period on.

Master Japanese Calligrapher Eri Takase brushes your scroll by hand when you order it. Each scroll bears her red seal, 英利, and her signature.

The scrolls are 12 1/4" W × 43" H (31 × 109 cm) with real silk borders and Japanese paper that are layered so the scroll hangs straight and will not warp over time. The scrolls themselves are made by Sankō (株式会社三幸) in Gifu prefecture, which has been making high quality scrolls since 1947, and we have worked with Sankō for over two decades.

Eri Takase was born and raised in Osaka, Japan, and holds the rank of Shihan, the highest rank in Japanese calligraphy, from the Bokuteki-kai and the Bunka-shodo. About Master Takase
