The Japanese word 尊敬 also means "Esteem", "Reverence", and "Honor" and is composed of the kanji尊 (read son) meaning "revered; valuable; precious; exalted" and 敬 (read kei) meaning "respect; awe; honor; revere"
The Japanese word rei also translates as "thanking; gratitude" and is a single kanji礼 (read rei) meaning "respect". Respect (rei) is used in everyday Japanese though a better word for everyday use is Respect (sonkei). Respect (rei) is more properly a Martial Arts term that is an important component of Bushido (bushidou), the Samurai Code of Chivalry, and is one of the Seven Virtues of Bushido.
