忠義礼誠名誉仁勇義 chūgi rei makoto meiyo jin yū gi Seven Virtues of Bushido

忠義礼誠名誉仁勇義 sets seven virtues side by side: loyalty, respect, honesty, honor, benevolence, valor and rectitude. Each one is a standard Japanese word for its virtue. 義, rectitude, is written twice: once on its own, and once inside 忠義, the word for loyalty. Which of bushidō's seven you hold closest is yours.

The seven virtues are the chapters of an English book, Bushido: The Soul of Japan (1900) by Nitobe Inazō 新渡戸稲造, which gives them no Japanese form; their short Japanese names are his translators', settled in Yanaihara Tadao 矢内原忠雄's translation of 1938, and this loyalty-first order is the house's own, on its pages by 2011.
