The Japanese word 合気道 is composed of the kanji合 (read ai) meaning "join; meet", 氣 (read ki) meaning "spirit", and 道 (read dō) meaning "the way; teachings". This version uses the archaic form of the kanji ki which is preferred by some schools. The modern form is 気 (read ki).
