国際和道流 kokusai wadōryū International Wadoryu
国際和道流 (kokusai wadōryū) is International Wadō-ryū, the karate school of Ōtsuka Hironori 大塚博紀 called international. No dictionary at kotobank and no digitized book at the National Diet Library carries the name. In English, of the bodies whose pages were read here, only his pupil Suzuki Tatsuo's federation uses the phrase, calling itself an International Wado-Ryu organization.
Abstract
国際和道流 is 国際, international, set before 和道流, the karate school of Ōtsuka Hironori 大塚博紀 (1892–1982). Japanese sets 国際 before a noun to make it international, and 国際和道流 says plainly international Wadō-ryū. No dictionary at kotobank, no entry in JMdict, no digitized book at the National Diet Library and no record in CiNii carries the name; the one body whose pages were read here that uses the phrase, in English, is the Wado International Karate-Do Federation, founded by Ōtsuka's pupil Suzuki Tatsuo 鈴木辰夫 in 1990 by its own account and in 1991 by another page of its site and the English Wikipedia. In English it calls itself an International Wado-Ryu organization; its Japanese name, as it romanizes it, is Wado Kokusai Karate-Do Renmei, with the school's name first.
Overview
The sense. The school's name with 国際 set before it: the Wadō-ryū school of karate, called international. It has no headword at kotobank and no entry in JMdict; 和道流 itself has no headword at kotobank and appears there inside an encyclopedia's article on karate [1]. The Japanese Wikipedia has an article on 和道流, a school of karate and jūjutsu founded by Ōtsuka Hironori [2].
The words. 国際 kokusai. The 精選版日本国語大辞典 gives it first as a noun, intercourse between nations, cited from 箕作麟祥's 国際法 of 1873, and then as a word-forming element: 名詞の上に付けて、「諸国家・諸国民間の」、「国と国との間の」の意を添える, set before a noun, it adds "of the nations", "between countries", as in 国際会議 and 国際空港. Its note on the word's history: coined in Japan, between the end of the Edo period and early Meiji, from the phrase 各国交際 in 万国公法, a Western book of international law in Chinese translation; used at first for diplomatic intercourse; coming into use for international from about the fourth decade of Meiji (1897–1906); and today used only in the second way, before a noun. The デジタル大辞泉: 複数の国家に関係していること。世界的であること。多く他の語の上に付けて用いる, concerning more than one nation; worldwide; mostly set before another word [3]. 和道 wadō: 和 harmony, peace, and 道 a way. The body led by Ōtsuka's family reads the name through his verse, 和の道究め和を求む道, a way that masters the way of harmony and seeks harmony [4]. 流 ryū is a current, and in the arts a school, a line of teaching handed down.
The text in English. International Wadō-ryū renders the characters word for word, in their order. The federation's English name is Wado International Karate-Do Federation, and its page on why it was formed says that Suzuki decided to start his own International Wado-Ryu organization [5].
The historical record
1929 to 1939, the name 和道流. Ōtsuka, a master of jūjutsu, learned karate from Funakoshi Gichin 船越義珍, Motobu Chōki 本部朝基 and Mabuni Kenwa 摩文仁賢和 [2]. When his school took its name, its own witnesses disagree. The Japanese Wikipedia's life of him says that in July 1938 he received the title 錬士 in karate from the 大日本武徳会, and that he named his school 神州和道流空手術, changing it the next year to 和道流, citing the 和道流八十年史 of 2016, p. 47 [6]. The 和道流空手道連盟, the body his family leads, says the school was founded in 1934, and that 和道流の名乗りは、昭和4年、「日本古武道振興会」の設立と共に、その入会時に称したのが始まりである, the name was first used in 1929, when he joined the 日本古武道振興会 at its founding; it also writes 神州和道流 [4]. The federation's page on Ōtsuka: The "Wado" story officially began in May 1934 when Hironori Ohtsuka registered his own style of Karate, which he called "Wado Ryu", and, after the 1938 title, The next year … Ohtsuka registered the name of "Wado-Ryu" [7]. The society's founding is itself in dispute inside one encyclopedia: the Japanese Wikipedia's article on the 日本古武道振興会 has it formed in February 1935 around 松本学, a member of the House of Peers [8], and its life of Ōtsuka has Ōtsuka launch it in 1929 (同年、大塚は日本古武道振興会を発足させた) [6]. This history holds the dates side by side.
1963 to 1991, Suzuki and the federation. Suzuki (1928–2011), of Yokohama, a direct pupil of Ōtsuka, began karate at about 14; in 1963 he toured Europe and America with juniors from his university, and from then on taught from London [9][10]. The English Wikipedia: In 1991, Suzuki decided to form his own federation to safeguard the essence of Wado Ryu as he was taught by his teacher [10]. The federation's own page: The Wado International Karate-Do Federation or Wado Kokusai Karate-Do Remni was founded in 1990 by Professor Tatsuo Suzuki 8th Dan Hanshi [5]; its page on Suzuki gives In 1991 Master Suzuki … established the Wado International Karate-Do Federation and, a few lines on, Back in 1990, and quotes him: In 1990 I started the WIKF [11]. The pages head themselves Wado Kokusai Karate-Do Renmei, and the paragraph's Remni is that word as the page prints it [5]. It calls itself in short the Wado Kokusai [5]. The English Wikipedia writes his name 鈴木 達夫; the Japanese Wikipedia writes 鈴木辰夫, and sets a 鈴木達夫 apart as another man [10][9].
Today. No dictionary, catalogue or digitized book read here writes 国際和道流 [1]. A rendering reads it International Wadō-ryū, keeps 流 as -ryū, and keeps it apart from the federation's own Japanese name.
A reading
国際和道流 is clear Japanese and says what it means: the Wadō school, international. Its order is the order Japanese gives such a name. 国際 set before a noun is how the language makes a thing international [3], and a karate body of another school names itself so, as the 国際松濤館空手道連盟 does in a library record of 1998 [12]. It is also the order of the English phrase the federation uses for itself, International Wado-Ryu [5]. Where it departs is from the federation's Japanese name as the federation romanizes it, Wado Kokusai Karate-Do Renmei, which keeps the school's name first [5]. I read 国際和道流 as a description, not a name: the school, called international, as Suzuki's federation describes itself in English, written in the order Japanese gives that description. It carries the school's own name, 和道流, unaltered.
Sources not seen
『和道流八十年史』 (和道流八十年史編纂委員会, 2016), which the Japanese Wikipedia cites for 神州和道流空手術 and the change of 1939. It would show which year the school's own history gives for the name.
日本古武道振興会 ed., 『日本古武道振興会創立五十周年記念誌』 (1985), listed in the Japanese Wikipedia's article on the society. It would date the society's founding from its own record. Its pages are not public at the National Diet Library.
