人生良好 (jinsei ryōkō), life, in good condition, is Japanese made for the English Life is Good. No Japanese book or dictionary prints the four characters as a phrase, and the design is on record from January 2011. This study reads its 良好, the word of the report card and the ward chart, not of a poet.

Abstract

人生良好, jinsei ryōkō, is house Japanese for the English Life is Good, four characters that no Japanese book or dictionary prints as a phrase. The phrase is on record from the house's own site by January 2011, and from one other calligraphy seller's by 2015; for the parts, 人生 is in a poem of 892 and 良好 in the Japanese translation of a Dutch book on Japan of 1833. 良好 is the word of the report card and the ward chart, not of a poet, so the compound reads to a Japanese eye as a status line, Life: condition good, rather than a sigh of contentment.

Overview

The sense. House Japanese for an English sentence: 人生 life and 良好 good, in good condition, four characters that no Japanese book or dictionary prints as a phrase. Not a Chinese phrase either; in the dictionaries neither Japanese nor bilingual. 良好 is what a grader writes, not what a poet says [1].

The words. 人生 jinsei is a person's life in this world, and the span of it [1]. 良好 ryōkō means good in the sense of in good condition [1].

The text in English. The English is ordinary and old.

The historical record

892, and 1713. 人生 is Chinese in the 史記, Japanese in a poem of 892 and in Kaibara Ekiken's 養生訓 of 1713, where caring for the body is 人生第一の大事, life's first business [1].

After 1833, the manuscript leaf. The 日本国語大辞典 first finds 良好 in 日本風俗備考, the Japanese translation of J. F. van Overmeer Fisscher's account of Japan. The dictionary's date, 1833, is the year the Dutch book was printed in Amsterdam; the translation was made in the Edo period's last decades, by 杉田成卿, 箕作阮甫 and four others under the shogunate's astronomer 山路諧孝 [2]. Of Nagasaki it says that the climate, for damp and heat, is 最も良好和平ならざるなり, not at all good and mild [3].

1902 to 1999, the two words with a particle. In the Diet Library's books the two words meet only with a particle between them. A moral-education reader of 1902 says that obeying the law is 良好なる人生の基礎, the foundation of a good life [4]. After the war 良好な人生 is the language of health science and social policy, where it renders well-being and a good start in life, and of the fortune-tellers, who pronounce a client's life 良好 the way a doctor pronounces a patient's progress: 大体にその人生は良好であります, on the whole their life goes well (1958); 概ね良好な人生を送りそうです, they look set for a life that goes well enough (1999) [5]. Where the search finds the four characters side by side, a comma or a word boundary falls between them, as in 幸福な人生、良好な日常業務, a happy life, sound daily work (1987) [5].

1906, Sōseki. Its next citation is Sōseki in 1906, 成績は良好だ, the results are good, and that is the word's home: the dictionaries illustrate it with reception, grades and a patient's progress [1].

The corpus. The Diet Library's index has 成績良好 at its ceiling of ten thousand books, 経過良好 in over fourteen hundred, 感度良好 in nearly a hundred from an army ordnance manual of 1914 onward [6].

Li Shizhen. In Chinese it is the same kind of word; Li Shizhen's materia medica uses it of a drug that improves with age [7].

2011, the house's own record. There is none to write for the compound before the house. The Diet Library's full-text search, which reaches from its public-domain books to books of this century, has 人生良好 as a phrase in none of them; Chinese and Japanese Wikisource have it nowhere; the Internet Archive's full text has the four characters only where a Chinese sentence runs 人生 into 良好的, as in 人生良好的开端, a good start in life; no dictionary, Japanese or bilingual, lists it. It is this house's rendering of Life is Good, and the earliest record of it is the house's own: the design image was captured on takase.com on 8 January 2011 [8].

2015, a second seller. The one other record found is a seller of Chinese calligraphy, Oriental Outpost, whose page for Life is Good offers 人生良好 as Japanese, jin sei ryou kou, and adds that it also makes sense in Chinese but reads more like life is all right. The page is captured with that entry in April 2015 [9].

1913, and the other Japanese phrases. What Japanese writers said when they meant the same thing the corpus does show. 人生は美しい, life is beautiful, is in thirty-six of the Diet Library's public-domain books from 1913 onward (the wider search has it earlier only before a noun, as in 人生は美しい極樂境, a beautiful paradise, in 1910), and nearly all of them are translations or their echo: Kuprin's Duel in 1913 (Yes, life is beautiful), Dostoevsky's elder Zosima, Beethoven's letter (life is beautiful, but for me it is forever poisoned), Tolstoy's Family Happiness, Gorky, and then Nagai Kafū and Nagayo Yoshirō writing it for themselves [10]. 人生は楽し, life is a joy, the public-domain index finds in 122 books from 1902, most of them the adjective 楽しい or the adverb 楽しく rather than the bare predicate, the first a student's primer, 人生は樂しく送らるべし, though the wider search has the bare predicate seven years earlier, in a literary magazine of 1895: 世界は善なり人生は樂しと呼ぶも, whether one cries the world is good, life is a joy [5]; 人生は善い from 1906 [10]; 好い人生, a good life, from 1921, より好い人生に達する爲めの手段, a means to a better life [5]; and a Japanese study of Browning in 1926 quotes Saul a word short, How good is man's the mere living, and renders it 人生は善し、たゞ生きることさへ, life is good, the mere living of it [5].

1925, and the film titles. 人生は素晴らしい, life is wonderful, which is what Weblio's film corpus gives for life is good, came into Japanese the same way. In April 1925 the film press gave Griffith's new picture, Isn't Life Wonderful (1924), the title 人生はすばらしい [11][12]; the predicate is in print by 1927 [11]; Gorky's Tales of Italy in Japanese has an engineer's しかし人生は、素晴らしいですねえ!, but life is wonderful, isn't it! (1936) [13]; Maurice Cloche's film La vie est magnifique (1938) is 人生は素晴らしい in the Japanese film press, and Rawlings's The Yearling has it in 1940 [11]. A Japanese novel of 1942 puts it in a young man's mouth: 花が咲いて鳥が歌ふ。人生は素晴らしい。さうだらう, the flowers bloom and the birds sing; life is wonderful, isn't it [11].

What is not a source. Not a proverb, not a classical phrase, not a dictionary word. Not Chinese. The 萬葉集 and the 史記 both appear in the index for 良好, and both are false: the one is 山上憶良 followed by 好去好来, the other 温良 followed by 好樂, the two characters meeting across a boundary [6].

The phrase in English

1807, and after. Wordsworth in 1807, in Song at the Feast of Brougham Castle, has when evil men are strong no life is good [14]; Swinburne, Ella Wheeler Wilcox, Edwin Arlington Robinson and William Carlos Williams (Come! Life is good—enjoy it!) all have it, as do Origen and Anselm in translation [15].

1994, and today. Its frequency in English books is flat across two centuries and doubles after 2000, and the capitalized form appears only then: the Life is Good Company, a Boston apparel maker founded in 1994, registered Life is good. as its trademark and put it on a stick figure's T-shirt [16]. Most people who ask for Life is Good in Japanese today are asking for that sentence in that spirit.

A reading

This is not a Japanese saying; it is a rendering of an English one, and the rendering has a character worth naming: because 良好 is the word of the report card and the ward chart, 人生良好 reads to a Japanese eye as a status line, Life: condition good, nearer to all systems go than to a contented sigh. The books bear the register out: where a Japanese book does call a life 良好, it is a fortune-teller reading a client's chart or a clinician reading a patient's. That may be exactly the wit wanted, and a T-shirt slogan wears it well; no one will misread it. A reader who wants what a Japanese writer would write has 人生は素晴らしい, which Japanese has used for life is wonderful since Griffith's film of 1925, or 人生は美しい, a century of translated joy, or 人生は楽し.
