The character on the kite is 旬 written in 甲骨文 read koukotsubun which is from the earliest form of Chinese characters found written on bone and tortoise shells. The character means "(1) season (e.g. fruit, fish); (adj-na,adj-no) (2) in vogue; popular; fresh; up to date" The text is from 紀 貫之 Ki no Tsurayuki 人知れず思ふ心春霞たちでて which is an excerpt from the full poem 人知れず 思ふ心は 春霞 たちいでて君が 目にも見えなむ
