The Japanese word saisei meaning "Rebirth" is composed of the kanji 再 (read sai) meaning "again; twice; second time" and 生 (read sei) meaning "life; birth".

The word's earliest dated witness is a Buddhist treatise Kumārajīva translated between 406 and 412, which calls a tooth that grows back 再生 and then corrects itself, since the old tooth does not grow again; the boy Katsugorō's remembered former life, set down in Japan in 1823 as his 再生, reached English in Lafcadio Hearn's The Rebirth of Katsugorō of 1897.

Master Japanese Calligrapher Eri Takase brushes your scroll by hand when you order it. Each scroll bears her red seal, 英利, and her signature.

The scrolls are 12 1/4" W × 43" H (31 × 109 cm) with real silk borders and Japanese paper that are layered so the scroll hangs straight and will not warp over time. The scrolls themselves are made by Sankō (株式会社三幸) in Gifu prefecture, which has been making high quality scrolls since 1947, and we have worked with Sankō for over two decades.
