Description

真理は勝つ (shinri wa katsu): truth prevails, truth wins in the end.

Truth prevails: not that it is winning now, but that it wins in the end, which is what a person means who chooses the line through a fight not yet won. 真理 is truth in the philosopher's sense, truth as a principle, a larger word than the everyday true; the Japanese says it in the plain present, and the English title's will only adds the wait the sentence already holds. It is a sentence more than one people has taken as its own, a scripture's line in India and the motto on a flag in Prague, and a Japanese-English dictionary gives it for the English proverb Truth will prevail, so the title and the text are one saying in two languages. Whose truth, and which fight, is yours.

About Our Scrolls

Master Japanese Calligrapher Eri Takase brushes your scroll by hand when you order it. Each scroll bears her red seal, 英利, and her signature.

The scrolls are 12 1/4" W × 43" H (31 × 109 cm) with woven damask borders and Japanese paper that are layered so the scroll hangs straight and will not warp over time. The scrolls themselves are made by a scroll maker in Gifu, Japan, and we have worked with them for over two decades.

Eri Takase was born and raised in Osaka, Japan, and holds the rank of Shihan, the highest rank in Japanese calligraphy, from the Bokuteki-kai and the Bunka-shodo. About Master Takase
