No Pain, No Gain in Japanese is 苦は楽の種 which is read ku wa raku no tane
苦は楽の種 (ku wa raku no tane): hardship is the seed of ease.
苦は楽の種 is said in the middle of a hard time: what is hard now is what a later ease will grow from. 種 is a seed, and the seed is the whole figure. Hardship is not a price paid for ease; ease grows out of it. The saying lives as a pair, 楽は苦の種、苦は楽の種: ease is the seed of hardship, and hardship the seed of ease. These words are the half people keep, the half that consoles.
No Pain, No Gain is the English proverb it sits nearest; the seed is what the Japanese keeps.
The proverb is first found as calligraphy: the Zen master Hakuin, about 1752 and again in 1768, tells of an old master who wrote out the two halves for everyone who asked him for calligraphy; a comic novel of 1774 has them as a sermon commonplace.

About Our Scrolls
Master Japanese Calligrapher Eri Takase brushes your scroll by hand when you order it. Each scroll bears her red seal, 英利, and her signature.
The scrolls are 12 1/4" W × 43" H (31 × 109 cm), with woven damask borders and layered Japanese paper, designed to last generations. The scrolls themselves are made by a scroll maker in Gifu, Japan, and we have worked with them for over two decades.
Eri Takase was born and raised in Osaka, Japan, and holds the rank of Shihan, the highest rank in Japanese calligraphy, from the Bokuteki-kai and the Bunka-shodo. About Master Takase
