自由に生まれて (jiyū ni umarete): born free.
自由に生まれて is a beginning, as the English is, with the rest left for the reader to say. 生まれて is the joining form of the verb to be born, so the phrase runs on into whatever comes next. Its 自由 is liberty, a sense the word took on when Japan read Europe.
This beautiful art celebrates the natural freedom that we are all born with - and to me it always reminds me of the film Born Free and Elsa the lioness.
The phrase is Meiji Japanese for born free: a Roman history of 1874 already writes it, and before 1900 it carried the first article of the 1789 Declaration of the Rights of Man and the first line of Rousseau's Social Contract; the 1966 film came to Japan as 野生のエルザ.

About Our Scrolls
Master Japanese Calligrapher Eri Takase brushes your scroll by hand when you order it. Each scroll bears her red seal, 英利, and her signature.
The scrolls are 12 1/4" W × 43" H (31 × 109 cm), with woven damask borders and layered Japanese paper, designed to last generations. The scrolls themselves are made by a scroll maker in Gifu, Japan, and we have worked with them for over two decades.
Eri Takase was born and raised in Osaka, Japan, and holds the rank of Shihan, the highest rank in Japanese calligraphy, from the Bokuteki-kai and the Bunka-shodo. About Master Takase
