宮本武蔵 (miyamoto musashi): Miyamoto Musashi, the swordsman and painter who wrote the Book of Five Rings.

宮本武蔵 is a name each reader meets through a different door. Some know the swordsman of the duels, or the founder of the school of two swords. The name joins 宮本, most often explained as the name of the village his family lived in, to 武蔵, the name of a province used as his common name without the governorship it would imply; he went by it with the Hosokawa house of Kumamoto in the 1640s, and signed the book he wrote on strategy with another surname, Shinmen.

The scrolls are 12 1/4" W × 43" H (31 × 109 cm) with real silk borders and Japanese paper that are layered so the scroll hangs straight and will not warp over time. The scrolls themselves are made by Sankō (株式会社三幸) in Gifu prefecture, which has been making high quality scrolls since 1947, and we have worked with Sankō for over two decades.
