和道流空手道 (wadōryū karatedō)
和道流空手道 (wadōryū karatedō). 和道 wadō is the way of harmony, the name Ōtsuka Hironori gave his school. A jūjutsu man and Funakoshi Gichin's earliest Tokyo pupil, he registered it with the Dai Nippon Butokukai as 神州和道流空手術 in 1938 and shortened the name the next year; the federation that carries his name dates the style's founding to 1934. 流 ryū is a school, 空手道 karatedō the way of the empty hand. With Gōjū-ryū, Shitō-ryū and Shōtōkan it is one of the four styles the mainland calls great.
