知者は惑わず (chisha wa madowazu)

知者は惑わず (chisha wa madowazu): one who understands how things are does not waver. Confucius said it in one breath with two more, in the Analects, book nine: the wise are not perplexed, the humane are not anxious, the brave are not afraid. Each virtue is named by the one thing it frees a person from. In Japan the three have been quoted one or two at a time for six centuries, which is what a scroll of one clause does.
