Something goes wrong between people or in a realm. Afterward the ground is firmer than before. The witnesses differ in the size of the disturbance. For one it is a reconciliation party of the 1620s, where Teitoku made a verse of it. In the telling of Ieyasu after Sekigahara, it is a war. In the dictionaries it is a disturbance of any size, with the quarrel kept at the center. Saikaku turns it to irony: in his story a bankrupt arranges to come out richer, and the proverb is his. After a storm comes a calm and an argument clears the air are its two English lives.
