糸東流空手道 (shitōryū karatedō). 糸東 shitō is a name made from two names: 糸 from Itosu Ankō 糸洲安恒 and 東 from Higaonna Kanryō 東恩納寛量, the Shuri and Naha masters under whom Mabuni Kenwa trained. He opened his dōjō in Osaka in 1934 and gave the school this name, having called it Mabuni-ryū three years earlier. 流 ryū is a school, 空手道 karatedō the way of the empty hand. With Gōjū-ryū, Wadō-ryū and Shōtōkan it is one of the four styles the mainland calls great.
