糸東流空手道 shitōryū karatedō Shito-Ryu Karate-Do

糸東 shitō is a name made from two names: 糸 from Itosu Ankō 糸洲安恒 and 東 from Higaonna Kanryō 東恩納寛量, the Shuri and Naha masters under whom Mabuni Kenwa trained. He taught karate in Osaka, and the name was in print as his school by 1941. 流 ryū is a school, 空手道 karatedō the way of the empty hand. With Gōjū-ryū, Wadō-ryū and Shōtōkan it is one of the four styles the mainland calls great.
