誇りと喜び (hokori to yorokobi): pride and joy. 誇り hokori is pride, the feeling of honor in someone; と is and; 喜び yorokobi is gladness, cited from a sutra of about 850. English has frozen pride and joy into an idiom for the person one is proudest of; Japanese has not, so the line reads as two feelings, said of a child, a pupil or a returning son. The noun 誇り is young in the dictionary's record, first cited from Shimazaki Tōson in 1910, and a year later a soldier home from his service wrote that he could not keep down some pride and joy at his welcome.
