John 14-6 The Way, The Truth, The Life

道真理命 (michi shinri inochi)

道真理命 (michi shinri inochi): the way, the truth, the life. The three characters are the nouns of John 14:6, I am the way and the truth and the life, with the sentence around them removed, as the Latin motto via veritas vita has done for centuries. They are the characters of the 1955 colloquial Japanese Bible, わたしは道であり、真理であり、命である, and the reading is that Bible's: 道 (michi) the way, 真理 (shinri) the truth, 命 (inochi) life. The older Japanese Bibles gave the middle word as makoto, a native word for truth, and two hymnals sang the verse that way, so michi, makoto, inochi is how a Japanese Christian's grandparents heard it; both readings are true of the characters.
