Isshinryu Karate-Do

一心流空手道 (isshinryū karatedō). 一心 isshin is one heart, a single undivided mind; 流 ryū is a school. Shimabukuro Tatsuo, who had trained under Kyan Chōtoku and Miyagi Chōjun, announced on 15 January 1956 that his synthesis of the Shōrin and Gōjū traditions and Okinawan weapons would carry this name. The U.S. Marines stationed on Okinawa learned it there and carried it home. 空手道 karatedō, the way of the empty hand, completes the name as the school writes it.
