Duty

義理 (giri)

The Japanese word 義理 is commonly translated as "duty" or "obligation" and refers to the feeling of obligation one has (should have) to repay what one has received from others - from parents, friends, bosses, teachers, and so on. 義理 is what one is duty bound to do and is often contrasted with Humanity (ninjou) which is what one should do because it is the right thing to do. For more information see the Wikipedia article article Giri.
