不名誉より死 (fumeiyo yori shi): death before dishonor, the crest's vow that honor outranks life. 不名誉 fumeiyo is dishonor, the damaging of one's good name; より yori is rather than; 死 shi is death; and the phrase has no verb, which is what a crest says and how Japanese says it too, the thing chosen standing last. The Latin behind the English is the badge of a Neapolitan order of 1464, malo mori quam foedari, I would rather die than be dishonored. The Japanese is the house's, in a noun that entered the language in 1887 with the first modern novel, so the sentence is new and its sentiment is old.
