自由に生まれて (jiyū ni umarete): born free. 自由 jiyū is freedom, an old word for as one pleases and a new one in the sense meant here, fixed by Fukuzawa's translations and the constitution of 1889; に makes it the manner; 生まれて umarete is the connective form of to be born, so the phrase is a fragment, born free and…, exactly as the English title is. No Japanese book to 1946 carries it; it is the house's Japanese for the 1966 film of Elsa the lioness and the song John Barry and Don Black wrote for it, and it carries the title fairly.
This beautiful art celebrates the natural freedom that we are all born with - and to me it always reminds me of the documentary Born Free and Elsa the lioness.
