World Peace

世界平和 (sekai heiwa): world peace, the peace of the world, peace among all the nations of the earth and the wish for it. 世界 (sekai) is the world, all the countries on earth, a word that began in Buddhism for the whole of existence; 平和 (heiwa) is peace as the absence of war, the state a country is in when it is not fighting. The compound is a modern word, made by translators of European political writing to carry a European hope, and since then it has been everyone's: the aim of Christian reformers and peace societies, the word diplomats gave to tsars and foreign secretaries, a nationalist's program and a socialist's hope, an emperor's word to his envoys, a postwar parliament's resolution, and the motto of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. No school owns it and each has used it against the others, which is the reason it can hang on anyone's wall. World Peace is the standard English of it, the rendering every Japanese-English dictionary gives, and it is right. 世界平和 is composed of the words 世界 (read sekai) meaning "the world" and 平和 (read heiwa) meaning "peace; harmony".
