戦争と平和 (sensō to heiwa)
戦争と平和 (sensō to heiwa): war and peace. 戦争 sensō is war; と to is and; 平和 heiwa is peace; two nouns in the order Tolstoy's title has them. It is the title the novel has carried in Japanese since the first editions, an abridgement of 1914 whose title leaf reads 戰爭と平和 トルストイ原作 in the old character forms, a translation of 1915 and a complete one of 1916, and every edition since. The pairing is older than the novel in either language and stands on its own: the two conditions a nation lives between, in four characters.
