Trust No One

誰も信じるな (dare mo shinjiru na): trust no one. 誰も dare mo with a negative is no one; 信じる shinjiru is to trust, to believe in; な na at the end is the prohibitive, don't. Without that last syllable the sentence would say trust everyone, so the small な is carrying the whole warning. The English is one of the captions The X-Files put in place of its usual the truth is out there at the end of certain episodes, first in The Erlenmeyer Flask in 1994; the series reached Japanese television in 1995. The Japanese encyclopedia gives the regular caption's Japanese and none for this one; 誰も信じるな is the house's, and it is what a Japanese speaker would say.
