己に忠実なれ (onore ni chūjitsu nare): be faithful to yourself. 忠実 is faithful, loyal, which is what Polonius meant by true when he gave his son this precept in Hamlet. The five characters are Kume Masao's, from his 1922 translation of the play, and his readers knew them already: since 1908 the writers of Japanese naturalism had made 自己に忠実なれ a watchword of the self against rules and models. Kume gave Polonius a Japanese maxim, which is why a line of Shakespeare reads here like a proverb.
