The Sound of One Hand Clapping

隻手の音声 (sekishu no onjou)

隻手の音声 (sekishu no onjō) means "the sound of one hand." It is the Zen koan of Master Hakuin Ekaku (1686–1769): "Two hands clap and there is a sound; what is the sound of one hand?" It joins 隻手 (sekishu) "a single hand" and 音声 (onjō) "sound, voice." The question is meant to be sat with, not solved.
