The Brave Have No Fears

勇者は懼れず (yūsha wa osorezu): one who has courage is not afraid. Confucius said it in one breath with two more, in the Analects, book nine: the wise are not perplexed, the humane are not anxious, the brave are not afraid. Each virtue is named by the one thing it frees a person from. A Noh play of about 1430 quotes this clause beside the first and turns it on a warrior's fierce heart; a scroll of the one clause has been a Japanese habit for six centuries.

勇者不懼 (yūshafuku) is the clause in the four characters the Analects print; 勇者は懼れず is the same line read as Japanese.
