The Benevolent Have No Worries

仁者は憂えず (jinsha wa ureezu): one whose heart is humane is not anxious. 仁 is the first Confucian virtue, humaneness, which English has long called benevolence. Confucius named it in one breath with two more, in the Analects, book nine: the wise are not perplexed, the humane are not anxious, the brave are not afraid, each virtue named by the one thing it frees a person from. The commentators add the reason the line leaves unsaid: at peace with what Heaven decrees, the humane have nothing to worry over.
