Fine Japanese Calligraphy

The Art of Master Japanese Calligrapher Eri Takase

Tattoo

刺青 (shisei)

Tattoo has a few words in Japanese. After the Edo period, when done for personal expression it was called shisei. The samurai class, and later yakuza, adopted the word sumiire. This kanji can actually be read either way. Wikipedia has a good article at Irezumi.
