黙って稽古 (damatte keiko): train in silence. 黙って (damatte) is in silence, the form of 黙る (damaru), to be silent, that leads into the next word; 稽古 (keiko) is practice, the same word for the tea room, the theater and the martial hall. As a slogan the phrase is a fragment, in silence, practice, which is the shape slogans take, and its sense is the instructor's answer to talk: do the work. It is modern Japanese with no author and no history in print; the halls keep it on their walls and in the air. Shut Up and Train is the house's rendering and carries the bluntness the phrase has in a hall.
