松涛館空手道 shōtōkan karatedō Shotokan Karate-Do

松涛館空手道 names a style of karate after a place: 松涛館, the hall of pine waves, the Tokyo dōjō where Funakoshi Gichin taught. 松涛, the sound of wind in the pines, was his pen name, and his supporters gave it to the hall they built for him. The karate taught there came to take the hall's name. He did not want his karate called a school of its own, and his students kept the name all the same. For someone who trains in this line, it names what they practice and the teacher it comes from.

The design writes 涛 in its modern form; 濤 is the older form of the same character, and the two are one word.
