Fine Japanese Calligraphy

The Art of Master Japanese Calligrapher Eri Takase

少林流 shōrinryū Shorin-Ryu (Shaolin)

少林流 (shōrinryū) is the name of a school of Okinawan karate, written with the characters of China's Shaolin temple, 少林寺. It is composed of 少林 (read shōrin), the Shaolin temple, and 流 (read ryū), a school: a line of teaching handed down. JMdict gives it as an Okinawa school of karate. Several schools share the sound or come close to it: Chibana Chōshin's school writes it 小林流, which is sometimes read kobayashi-ryū to tell the two apart.

About the Designs

Each design is Master Japanese Calligrapher Eri Takase's hand-brushed calligraphy of the word or phrase on this page, delivered as a PDF you can print. Every PDF includes the line art, so a tattoo artist or a craftsperson can work from the outline as well as the brushed image. The line art prints sharp at any size. The brushed image is sized to print at the dimensions shown on the PDF, so for a larger piece, work from the line art.
