自粛 is holding back by your own choice, a limit a person or a group sets on itself. In the COVID-19 pandemic it was the word for staying home. For self-discipline as self-control, Japanese also says 自律 (jiritsu) or 克己 (kokki).
The Japanese word 自粛 meaning "Self-Discipline" is composed of the kanji自 (read ji) meaning "oneself" and 粛 (read shuku) meaning "solemn; quietly; softly".
