科学者 is a scientist, a person whose work is science, 科学 (kagaku). Someone who does research in any field is 研究者 (kenkyūsha).
The Japanese word 科学者 meaning "Scientist" is composed of the kanji科 (read ka) meaning "department; course; section", 学 (read gaku) meaning "study; learning; science", and 者 (read sha) meaning "someone; person".
