浪人 rōnin Ronin

浪人 is a ronin, a samurai with no master to serve. The characters say a wandering person. The word can also mean a person out of work. In Japan today it also names a student who failed a university entrance exam and will try again. For a person who goes their own way, Japanese says 一匹狼, the Lone Wolf (ippikiōkami).

The Japanese word 浪人 meaning "Ronin" is composed of the kanji 浪 (read rō) meaning "wave; wandering" and 人 (read nin) meaning "person".
