懺悔 zange Repentance
More about 懺悔
懺悔 is owning up to a wrong and being sorry for it, before the gods and buddhas, before God, or before other people. Its 懺 stands for the Sanskrit kṣama. In Buddhism, and in older Japanese, the word is read sange. A confessional is 懺悔室 (zangeshitsu).
The Japanese word 懺悔 meaning "Repentance" is composed of the kanji 懺 (read zan) meaning "regret; repent; confess sins" and 悔 (read ge) meaning "repent; regret".
