錦蛇 nishikihebi Python

錦蛇 is the python, a large snake with no venom that kills its prey by coiling around it. Its skin is patterned in dark patches, and 錦 is brocade, a cloth woven with patterns. The word is usually written in katakana, ニシキヘビ, and these designs use the kanji.

The Japanese word 錦蛇 meaning "Python" is composed of the kanji 錦 (read nishiki) meaning "brocade" and 蛇 (read hebi) meaning "snake".
