北極星 hokkyokusei Polaris

北極星 is Polaris, the North Star, a star of the Little Bear. It shines near the north pole of the sky and marks the way north. In Buddhism it is honored as the bodhisattva Myōken.

The Japanese word 北極星 meaning "Polaris" is composed of the word 北極 (read hokkyoku) meaning "North Pole" and the kanji 星 (read sei) meaning "star".
