不死鳥 fushichō Phoenix

不死鳥 is the phoenix, the sacred bird of Egyptian legend that enters a fire every 500 years and is reborn young from the ashes. The name means the bird that does not die. To come back like a phoenix, 不死鳥の如くよみがえる, is said of someone who returns after seeming finished.

The Japanese word 不死鳥 meaning "Phoenix" is composed of the kanji 不 (read fu) meaning "not", 死 (read shi) meaning "die; death", and 鳥 (read chō) meaning "bird".
