椰子 yashi Palm Tree

椰子 is the palm, and usually the coconut palm, though the word covers the whole palm family, the date palm included. The 子 here does not mean child. It is a suffix added to the names of things, as in 帽子 (bōshi), hat, and 菓子 (kashi), sweets.

The Japanese word 椰子 meaning "Palm Tree" is composed of the kanji 椰 (read ya) meaning "coconut tree" and 子 (read shi) meaning "child".
