運命無し unmei nashi No Fate

A statement in the grammar of classical Japanese, exact for the English it renders: 運命 is fate and destiny both, the power beyond a person's will that hands out good fortune and ill and the fortune so handed out, and 無し says there is none. It is this studio's rendering of the English, not a saying Japan has, and the English is the line a 1991 film made famous, no fate but what we make; when Japanese writers said the sentence at all it was to argue with fate, that effort beats it or that a person carves their own. A person who chooses it takes the film's idea in a correct old form, the statement and not the command, and knows it for what it is.

運命無し is composed of the words 運命 (read unmei) meaning "fate; destiny" and 無し (read nashi) meaning "no; without; none".
