猿 saru Monkey

猿 is a monkey, most of all Japan's own snow monkey. A proverb says 猿も木から落ちる (saru mo ki kara ochiru): even monkeys fall from trees, so anyone can make a mistake. The Year of the Monkey is 申年 (sarudoshi).

Each design is Master Japanese Calligrapher Eri Takase's hand-brushed calligraphy of the word or phrase on this page, delivered as a PDF you can print. Every PDF includes the line art, so a tattoo artist or a craftsperson can work from the outline as well as the brushed image.
