Live the Moment

今を生きる (ima wo ikiru)

今を生きる (ima wo ikiru): live the moment, live the now. 今 ima is now; を marks it as the object; 生きる ikiru is to live: to live the now, with the present as the thing lived rather than the time one lives in. Behind the English is Horace's carpe diem, in the ode that tells Leuconoe to strain the wine and cut long hope short, since even as we speak envious time has fled: pluck the day. The 1989 film Dead Poets Society built a story on it, and its Japanese title is いまを生きる, this phrase in kana. The four characters were Japanese before the film and from another direction: a 1936 religious writer used them for the Buddhist now, the now that is already past even as one says it. Horace and the sutras arrive at the same four characters.
